The Gators finally got back on the field for the first time since our preseason tour to Ireland in February.
Facing a Hammerheads team who similarly hadn’t played for a fair while, Game 1 started out as a defensive struggle as both teams struggled to move the ball. The deadlock was broken when Gators QB Chris Bartlett-Legge threw a frozen rope of a pass, sadly for him and the Gators it found a gleeful Hammerhead defender who took it back for 6.
The Gators D played admirably all first half and Swansea only gained an additional score off another interception that left them with short yardage to score. The Defense held until 4th down before Swansea finally punched it in and converted the XP to make it 13-0 at the half. The Gators Offense decided to join the Touchdown party early in the 2nd half with a short pass to Matt Bourke at halfway to secure a first and goal but Matt had other ideas and out ran the Hammerhead defenders to open the Gators account on the day.
Swansea scored again on their next drive, with the Gators D coming up short and a defensive mixup later in the half allowed Swansea to get in for another score before Chris and the Offense drove the field and found Matt Bourke in the corner on a well executed play for what turned into the Gators consolation score and the last score of the game as Swansea ran out winners 25-12.
Game 2 saw the Gators mix personnel up, with a squad of 18 to contend with and Swansea took full advantage, intercepting Gators QB Liam Giles early in the first half before he found Huw Walford short, who turned it into a near length of the field gallop, avoiding 3 would be Swansea defenders for the score. By this time Swansea had built a 3 Touchdown lead at the half. Gators HC Dale Davies took the QB reigns for the 2nd stanza and in the first possession of the half, drove the Gators down the field finishing with finding a wide open Jan Coetsee in the endzone.
On the following drive, a sideline fade from Dale saw the ball fall short of the aforementioned Jan and was picked off by Swansea for their 2nd interception of the game. Swansea would grab another score or 2 before one final drive from the Gators O stalled at the goaline with a failed 4th down attempt to score.
Final score finished 38-12 Swansea.
The Gwent Gators will return next weekend away at Swansea for the return Gameday.
