NEW SIGNING | GWENT GATORS SIGN RYAN TANDY

The Gwent Gators are proud to announce the signing of experienced defensive player Ryan Tandy.

Tandy, or Tandalorian as he's known, explained his decision and immediate outlook:

"I was always intrigued by flag football and with the easing of lockdown I felt it was now or never to give it a go. When I was researching teams in the area the Gators stood out as a club that was keen to develop while still retaining a social ethos. I played football for the Bristol Aztecs and my uni team many years ago so I had a pretty good understanding of the mechanics of the game, and Dale was more than happy to answer all of my questions when I first reached out to him.

I’ve been involved with teams at a variety of levels and across a number of sports, but I don’t think I’ve come across a more welcoming bunch than the Gators. The camaraderie is clear from the moment you first step on the paddock for training, and everyone is more than happy to help. Across the board the coaches have been great, with a particular shout out to Mark Studley; some people have said he’s just happy to have a rookie turn up and actually want to play defence but Mark has been fantastic.

Personally, this season is all about getting comfortable with the game and the playbook. Although we’ll obviously be aiming for an unbeaten season, the temporary realignment of the divisions gives me a chance to come up against teams of a variety of levels without the pressure of league positions.

Beyond that, aim to develop as a player while also helping the club grow. The goal should always be to be the best team in the UK, so the chance to play against the Hurricanes this season is one I’m looking forward to. There’s a clear desire to improve and develop running through the club, and I’m excited to be a part of that."

Head Coach Dale Davies told us his excitement over the impact.

"Ryan has recently joined us and has already made an impact, especially on defence. He’s settling into Safety very quickly but has the ability to play corner and also has a great catch radius so can pinch hit on OffenCe when required.

In the last Gameday, Mark, our DC, gave him the responsibility of organising the Defense and calling the schemes and did an admirable job, so much so that he won Defensive Player of the Day.

We are excited to see what the season will bring for him, being on the Orange Squad will provide him with ample opportunities to grow and become a starter and leader within the squad."

Defensive Co-ordinator Mark Studley was overjoyed with the new addition:

"Tandy has come in been a huge addition to the team. His arrival couldn't have come at a better time adding some much needed depth and experience at safety.

He's fitted in brilliantly with the squad both on and off the field, with the defensive MVG performance in his first outing for the club. It's been great to add his enthusiasm and commitment, and I am really excited to have him as part the defence going forward."

Tandy will join the Gwent Gators Orange Squad for the one-off Welsh Division Season.

Earlier this week, the Gwent Gators announced the rosters for the Orange and Blue Squads.
